Hope Renewed, As Nigerian Lawyer Unveils NGO Against Copyright Violation

In an era inundated with gross abuse of copyright laws by individuals and corporate organisations, a renowned Nigerian Lawyer, Hon. (Barr.) Rockson Igelige of R.A Igelige and Co Law firm, unveils a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for the protection and promotion of creative art and entertainment.

The NGO, Friends of the Creator Foundation (FCF), which is to be unveiled on Thursday 1st June, 2017 at 12 noon to mark the Founder’s birthday, seeks to put a stop to the unlawful and illicit manner the professional works of Artists in the entertainment and creative industry are stolen, reproduced, duplicated, and copied without due permission of the Creator.

The event, which shall be holding at R.A Igelige Co Law House aka Tangele Chamber along Odoro road, Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State, shall be chaired by the immediate past Chairman of Governing Board, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, Maj. Gen. Paul Ufuoma Omu (rtd.) and shall have some of the finest Actors, Artists, Creators, Intellectual Property Advocates, Human Rights Activists, and other important personalities in attendance. Notable among them is the Chairman of Copyright Society of Nigeria and former President of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Chief Tony Okoroji; the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Comr. Omoyele Sowore; a veteran Actor, Mr. Nobert Young; the Chairman of IC Global Micro Finance Bank and a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief (Barr.) Joe Arausi, among others.

Mr. Ituru Oghenerukevwe Roy will be delivering a lecture titled, ‘Everyman Should Enjoy the Fruits of his Labour (An Intellectual Property Right)’, in honour of the unveiling of FCF/birthday event.

Barr. Rockson Igelige, a chieftain of the APC, who studied Entertainment Law in the University of Westminster, UK, has been at the forefront of the fight against copyright infringement and advocacy on the protection of intellectual property right in Nigeria. He is currently handling several cases of copyright infringement against some top business establishments in Nigeria, which includes Sun Newspaper, MTN, etc.

The birth of FCF is, therefore, a breakthrough for all Creators in the entertainment and creative industry, a development that should be welcome by all Friends of the Creators and the Creative Industry.
